L'11 maggio 2025, in concomitanza con l'apertura delle LVI Settimana di Studi, questa Fondazione ha inaugurato in Palazzo Pretorio la mostra “Lo storico e il mercante. Federigo Melis e Francesco Datini” curata da Angela Orlandi. L'esposizione è stata organizzata in collaborazione con il Museo di Palazzo Pretorio, l’Archivio di Stato di Prato, la Banca d’Italia-MUDEM e il Museo Galileo di Firenze. La mostra è dedicata a Federigo Melis e a Francesco Datini: uno storico e un mercante, due uomini vissuti in tempi molto diversi, ma legati da un sottile filo che attraversa sette secoli di storia economica e non solo. L’iniziativa ricorre nel Settantesimo anniversario della visita di Luigi Einaudi e Giovanni Gronchi che si stavano avvicendando alla Presidenza della Repubblica. Einaudi e Gronchi giunsero a Prato nel 1955 per inaugurare l'esposizione Internazionale dell'Archivio Datini organizzata da Federigo Melis in Palazzo Pretorio. Il pubblico potrà vedere oggetti, immagini, fotografie, documenti archivistici e filmati che raccontano “lo storico” e “il mercante”. Da segnalare in particolare le preziose tavolette di argilla mesopotamiche, esempi di contabilità del tempio risalenti al III e al II millennio avanti Cristo. Sono state esposte proprio perché su queste fonti Federigo Melis ha dato avvio ai suoi studi di storia della ragioneria. Tra i tanti preziosi materiali si trovano anche lettere scelte fra gli straordinari carteggi che Federigo Melis e Francesco Datini scambiarono con le rispettive consorti, Gabriella Forconi e Margherita Bandini. Particolarmente interessanti quelle che lo storico inviò alla moglie durante la sua prigionia in Africa. I loro contenuti possono essere ascoltati attraverso QR code realizzati da giovani dottorandi. Tra le tante curiosità, spicca una teca al cui interno è conservato il registro nel quale si annotarono alcuni degli ingredienti della torta che Francesco fece preparare per il pranzo di nozze della figlia Ginevra; attraverso un apposito QR code è possibile effettuare un contributo liberale: il visitatore può diventare mecenate aiutando l’Archivio di Stato a restaurare il manoscritto. La mostra resterà aperta fino al 23 novembre 2025.

On May 11, 2025, coinciding with the opening of the 56th Study Week, the exhibition “The Historian and the Merchant: Federigo Melis and Francesco Datini” opened at Palazzo Pretorio, curated by Angela Orlandi. The exhibition is organized by the “F. Datini” Foundation in collaboration with the Palazzo Pretorio Museum, the Prato State Archives, the Bank of Italy–MUDEM, and the Galileo Museum in Florence. The exhibition is dedicated to Federigo Melis and Francesco Datini: a historian and a merchant, two men who lived in very different times but are connected by a subtle thread that runs through seven centuries of economic history and beyond. The initiative commemorates the seventieth anniversary of the visit of Luigi Einaudi and Giovanni Gronchi, who were in the process of succeeding one another as President of the Republic. Einaudi and Gronchi came to Prato in 1955 to inaugurate the International Exhibition of the Datini Archives, organized by Federigo Melis at Palazzo Pretorio. Visitors will be able to explore objects, images, photographs, archival documents, and films that narrate the lives and legacies of “the historian” and “the merchant.” Particularly noteworthy are the precious Mesopotamian clay tablets - examples of temple accounting dating back to the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE - displayed in recognition of the fact that Federigo Melis began his studies in the history of accounting with these very sources. Among the many valuable items on display are selected letters from the remarkable correspondences that Melis and Datini exchanged with their respective wives, Gabriella Forconi and Margherita Bandini. Of special interest are the letters Melis sent to his wife during his imprisonment in Africa; their contents can be listened to via QR codes created by young PhD students. Among the exhibition's many curiosities, one display case features the register in which some of the ingredients for the cake Francesco Datini had prepared for his daughter Ginevra’s wedding banquet were recorded. Through a dedicated QR code, visitors can make a donation and become patrons by helping the State Archives restore this manuscript.
The exhibition will remain open until 23 November 2025.

Le 11 mai 2025, à l'occasion de l'ouverture de la LVIe Semaine d'Études, cette Fondation a inauguré au Palazzo Pretorio l'exposition « L'historien et le marchand. Federigo Melis et Francesco Datini », organisée par Angela Orlandi. L'exposition a été réalisée en collaboration avec le Musée du Palazzo Pretorio, les Archives d'État de Prato, la Banque d'Italie-MUDEM et le Musée Galilée de Florence. L'exposition est consacrée à Federigo Melis et à Francesco Datini : un historien et un marchand, deux hommes ayant vécu à des époques très différentes, mais liés par un fil subtil qui traverse sept siècles d'histoire économique et au-delà. Cette initiative marque le soixante-dixième anniversaire de la visite de Luigi Einaudi et Giovanni Gronchi, qui se succédaient alors à la Présidence de la République. Einaudi et Gronchi vinrent à Prato en 1955 pour inaugurer l'Exposition Internationale des Archives Datini, organisée par Federigo Melis au Palazzo Pretorio. Le public pourra découvrir des objets, des images, des photographies, des documents d'archives et des films qui racontent « l'historien » et « le marchand ». Il convient de signaler en particulier les précieuses tablettes d'argile mésopotamiennes, exemples de comptabilité de temple datant des IIIe et IIe millénaires avant Jésus-Christ. Elles sont exposées précisément parce que c'est sur ces sources que Federigo Melis a commencé ses études sur l'histoire de la comptabilité. Entre autres pieces précieuses exposées se trouvent des lettres choisies dans les extraordinaires correspondances que Federigo Melis et Francesco Datini échangèrent avec leurs épouses respectives, Gabriella Forconi et Margherita Bandini. Particulièrement intéressantes sont celles que l'historien envoya à sa femme pendant sa captivité en Afrique. Leur contenu peut être écouté grâce à des QR codes réalisés par de jeunes doctorants. Parmi les nombreuses curiosités, on remarque une vitrine à l'intérieur de laquelle est conservé le registre dans lequel furent notés certains des ingrédients du gâteau que Francesco fit préparer pour le repas de noces de sa fille Ginevra ; grâce à un QR code spécifique, il est possible de faire un don et de devenir mécène en aidant les Archives d'État à restaurer le manuscrit.
L'exposition restera ouverte jusqu'au 23 novembre 2025.

La Fondazione Istituto Internazionale di Storia Economica “F. Datini” bandisce lo Human Solvency Historical Research Prize 2026.
Il premio si propone di valorizzare la ricerca storica di studiosi che mettono a tema delle loro indagini la questione della solvibilità economica considerata in tutte le sue implicazioni, a partire da quelle dei linguaggi, dei lessici teologici, filosofici e giuridici che anno strutturato concetti chiave quali povertà, bene comune, debito pubblico, fiscalità, istituzione monetaria. Si intende favorire un approccio di lungo periodo valutando ricerche e analisi di fenomeni storici maturati tra i secoli XI e XVIII.
L'ammontare del premio e di 10.000,00 euro

The Fondazione Istituto Internazionale di Storia Economica “F. Datini” bans the Human Solvency Historical Research Prize 2024-2026 1. The prize aims to enhance the historical research of scholars who focus their investigations on the question of economic solvency considered in all its implications, starting from those of the languages, the theological, philosophical and legal lexicons that have structured concepts key such as poverty, common good, public debt, taxation, monetary institution. The intention is to promote a long-term approach by evaluating research and analysis of historical phenomena that developed between the 11th and 18th centuries.
The prize amounts to € 10.000,00 (before taxes, if due).
